Optical Switching

This figure shows how an electro-optical switch converts optical signals to and from electrical signals to allow the connection through an electronic switching system. This diagram shows an optical switch with 3 input ports and 3 output ports. Each input port contains an optical receiver that converts the optical signal into an electrical signal form. The electrical signals are supplied to an electronic switching matrix memory. Portions of each input signal are temporarily stored in the switching memory. The switch control software determines which memory information is directed to specific optical output ports. Each electrical output is then converted back into an optical signal by an optical transmitter.
