Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) 

This figure shows a SONET system. This example shows that a SONET system may have several configurations including ring, star or point-to-point configuration. This diagram shows that the key components of a SONET system include add drop multiplexers (ADM), digital cross connects (DCS) and terminal adapter (TA). This example shows that this SONET system has been setup to have several survivable ring connections that will automatically reconfigure if one of the parts of its ring connections becomes disabled (e.g. cut). This example shows that a fiber cable in ring #2 has been cut and that the SONET system has automatically reconfigured to continue operation to all the devices in the network.
